A Rousing Affair

Aug 11, 2004

The Barbaro campaign for Congress held a rousing fundraiser tonight at Bob's restaurant, the Gulf Coast Cafe on MacDougal Street in Soho. There were well over 100 people who gathered (at $100 and up per person no less) to hear famous American humorist/populist Jim Hightower blast the Bush administration and who pointed out the double task of replacing Bush as well as the Congress which is now dominated by the Republicans. Key to that task is the election of Frank Barbaro, he said, in the 13th C.D. (Staten Island and Brooklyn).

Hightower was introduced by self-described "former, almost Mayor" Mark Green, who, in great humorous form, bashed Bush and lauded Frank. Wine and beer were served as well as cheese, salad and hot wings. Despite a drenching rain people turned out and cheered on the candidate as he continues on to a hoped for victory in November.

Each person was given a signed copy of Jim Hightower's new book, Let's Stop Beating Around the Bush. It was a memorable evening. From the Gulf Coast Cafe, the entourage travelled up to University Place where the Lithorgraphers' Union hosted another fundraiser.
