The weather finally turned bitterly cold today. This, after a springtime in January -- temps in the 50's and 60's and, on a walk, yesterday, I saw crocus shoots pushing up through the winter soil. Nature is being bent out of shape.
All the while, the war for oil in Iraq rages on and George Bush tells us not to worry about the earth, hurricanes, global warming, people suffering or anything else for that matter. He'll handle it. But just in case more and more of us should worry and protest and demand impeachment for his high crimes against the world and its peoples, he'll make sure the Supreme Court will cover his ass. Thus are we treated to the scene of the Democrats wringing their hands and complaining of helplessness at the takeover of the Supreme Court. (Query to Hillary - what ever happened to the "vast right-wing conspiracy?" You're strangely silent as the conspiracy has become a reality). And what of the fillibusters that were promised in just such an eventuality? And finally, once again, WHERE (or better, WHAT are the Democrats??!!
Mrs. Alito sheds phony tears and the press has a field day focusing on her vaudeville act instead of the real issue: an extremist coup d'etat, begun with the stealing of the 2000 and 2004 elections and rapidly being brought to completion with the packing of the Supreme Court. The conclusion of all this? Perhaps the President transformed into a King and our democracy into an oligarchy controlled by the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal and the oil companies.
My prediction: the ads at the gas pump will soon be campaigning to keep their man in office instead of offering a hot dog and a soda for $1.99.
All is not lost however - Congress can still be turned around. Democrats can have some spine inserted. But it takes action - letters written, calls made, family, friends and co-workers organized and street protests mounted in ever-increasing numbers to demand that our democracy be saved before it is too late. Representative Conyers has already called for Congressional hearings to consider censuring the President and Vice-President for the crimes of wiretapping without warrants. And Al Gore, who has finally found his voice (and it's clear and strong, albeit late in coming), is said to soon make a speech that will highlight the grave crisis that is threatening our Constitution and democractic society.
"The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality." Dante said that in the 1200's. But it was as true then as it was in the 1930's in Germany as it is true today in our country. Now is not the time to be complacent or sit on the sidelines watching the action.

Good Gezucht ! ! !
Matt, Once again you nailed the SOB's. And as we have so often decried, we know the enemy, the Republicans, but it is the gutless and complicit Dems that are more to blame for their inaction and acquiescence. Fred
Hi Matt. I'm a friend of Fred R's. I agreed with your last comment but think you're being a bit naieve to think that things can be turned around. I have moved significantly to the left as I've gotten older, not the other way around. The way I see it, our way of life is not sustainable. By that I mean that our conspicuous consumption, which requires cheap labor and the theft of other people's resources, is not viable. I think our govt is no longer recoverable. It is wholly corrupt on both sides of the aisle. I agree completely with the last poster who said that the Dems are as guilty in this as the Republicans. Wholesale gutlessness is the rule. Howver, I believe that simply attempting to change Congress or trying to get Dems to have a little courage misses the point. We are 10% of the world's population and we consume more than 50% of the earth's rescources. I think it is our way of life that needs closer examination. I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. The Dems will nominate yet another loser in Hillary and even if she does get elected, I completely disagree with her policies, if we can even figure out what they are. From now on, I vote will vote with my conscience, even if it is a loser. The only people I can see out there who speak for me are Ralph Nader, Dennis Kucinich, and Bernie Sanders. But to think that Congress can be turned around when Congress is merely a tool of corporate interests, or to fail to see our way of life as something to be preserved, as I said, misses the point. Sorry, but it's not easy being a Marxist-Freudian- Darwinian-humanist!
I agree with (the friend of Fred), Gary.
